How do you scale up your business, without adding more content?

I’m in the process of writing my goals for the next year and one of the areas that I chose to focus (from the current year’s focus-areas) is to scale up the business.

The truth is that scaling your business should be one of your focus area EVERY YEAR.

This is where you make more money.

While there are many ways, I’d like to focus on two ways –

  1. Send more of your target audience to your products
  2. Take your products to more of your target audience

No, these are no play of words. There is a profound difference.

The BEST part is that here we are not talking about creating more products. We are talking about getting your products to meet more people.

Let us look at these two strategies in a bit detail.

SCALE UP STRATEGY 1: DRIVE TRAFFIC TO YOUR PRODUCTS

Even if you have ONE product (you should be building a funnel soon) – even if it is a $7 ebook – you can increase sales by driving traffic – people from your target group, who are likely to buy – to your product’s sales page.

Once your readers are on your blog, considering your content is of insane value to them, they will soon be looking for a product you’d want them to buy.

We will not get into details of traffic strategies in this post, but here are 3 that you should be thinking about, and if not already, start implementing.

Traffic strategy 1: Search Engine Optimization

SEO is the primary weapon of getting traffic for every blogger.

It is also the organic (and free) way of getting a constant stream of people on to your blog.

Two areas to focus for SEO are,

1. What you do on your site when you create content (On-page SEO)

For a blogger, this is writing the blog post. You start with a keyword. A word or phrase that is your core topic of your blog post.

You use your keyword in your blog title, URL, sub-headings, and in the content. Plus, you also use few key-phrases related to the same blog post topic (called long-tail keywords) in the content.

In fact there is a simpler way to do this.

Use one of the WordPress plugins such as YoastSEO. As you type content, this tool continuously shows you what to do in order to get a good ‘SEO score’. It’s Traffic Light Signal based indication is easy to follow. Aim for all greens.

As a bonus, it also rates your content on Flesch Reading Ease scale and tells you exactly what you need to make your content better (psst.. it also helps you create the sitemap xml file that search engines need to index your blog posts).

2. What others do about your site (offsite SEO)

This relates to how other sites in your niche treat your site. When you post high quality content, naturally other sites in your niche start pointing to your blog (either root domain or any particular post).

These are the ‘backlinks’ you get for your blog.

This is a strong indication to search engines that your blog is a high quality one. Your content is important enough for other blogs to be linked to, and so it must be valuable to your and their readers. Hence your blog must be important in your niche.

That’s how search engines ‘think’ and start to give your pages higher page rank (or weightage as compared to other similar pages from other blogs in your niche).

I would stay away from any dubious means of getting backlinks (‘buying’ from others, for instance). Search engines penalize blogs heavily if they find out about such practices. Better to be honest and safe.

Traffic strategy 2: Social Media (start with Facebook)

No matter what niche your blog is in, you can find your target audience on social media.

By having your business presence on social media, you can direct their attention to your business profile, and from there on to your blog.

This is a powerful, and simple, strategy to get constant flow of organic traffic for free.

Moreover, with your business presence on social media you can choose to drive targeted traffic to your blog within minutes by leveraging paid-advertising services of theirs.

At the least, you must have a business page on facebook.

Next, I would focus on Twitter (broadcast every post and event) and Pinterest at the least – because it doesn’t take too much of effort to create and share content for these.

Next best platform to get on to is YouTube. Since Google owns it you can get some affinity from the search engine when you backlink from YouTube page to your blog. Plus, YouTube is worlds second largest search engine, so you will find LOT of targeted traffic from that platform on to your blog.

Traffic strategy 3: Online Forums

Online forums are where you can practically live and source your content from.

People complain, share, critique on platforms. Their problems are your sources of content to be generated, and when you have them, share the content on those forums and you automatically get laser targeted traffic to your blog.

And it is practically perpetual source of traffic.

Do all the above and you can easily expect to get more and more people on to your blog, and if your blog is engineered well to convert them into paying customers, then it is given that your revenue will shoot through the roof.

SCALE UP STRATEGY 2: TAKE YOUR PRODUCTS TO YOUR PROSPECTS

This is where you make your products available on multiple platforms.

Create once, share with many, make more money.

It’s like having multiple branches of your office in multiple cities – your products will be the same, and you increase your potential for revenue generation.

The benefit of this strategy is that you get immediate access to a large pool of YOUR target audience on every platform!

For instance, if you are selling your ebook on your blog, you sell it also on Amazon as a Kindle book (and a print book as well, if you wish).

If you are selling a video course on your blog, sell it on Skillshare and Udemy as well.

When done right, this is a brilliant strategy to enhance your income.

Which strategy should you choose?

Start with what you can.

On an average ebooks earn you lesser than courses. I bet you knew that.

It is easy to create an ebook and sell it off your blog, and other platforms. If you are a natural speaker and comfortable in front of the camera, you can create a course with ease.

I started with ebooks. From the time that I created my first one, I’ve gone on to create 20+ more books and self-published them under my own publication entity. I have earn tens of thousands of dollars from books revenue and continue to do it as a passive income stream.
